Edible Institute
I have just returned from Santa Fe, New Mexico where I attended “Edible Institute” – an opportunity that left me feeling more motivated than ever and committed in my passion to create awareness and change. As food and connection provide nourishment, it’s clear that that is a goal shared by Edible Communities and me.

With more than 60 magazines within the United States and Canada, this community of publishers is blazing a path by featuring local, sustainable foods and artisans that highlight our regional differences and support the richness of our communities and land. Edible publishers from Vancouver to Memphis, Martha’s Vineyard to Austin, and Manhattan to Los Angeles all shared their insights on farming, biodiversity, sustaining culinary heritage and much more.

Deborah Madison leads a tour of the Santa Fe Farmers Market
Speakers like Fred Kirschenmann, a leader in the organic/sustainable agriculture movement and a fellow of the Leopold Center for Sustainable Agriculture, renowned cookbook author Deborah Madison and writer/blogger Elissa Altman, founder of the blog Poor Man’s Feast and published in The Huffington Post rounded out a lengthy list of inspiring guest speakers that shared their wisdom and created dialogue that is certain to be reflected in an Edible Magazine near you! If you haven’t picked up an Edible Magazine in your neck of the woods, now is a great time to do so. Click here to learn more.

Local flavors of Santa Fe
I’m looking forward to working with my new Edible friends in Austin, Hudson Valley, Manhattan, Sarasota, Chicago…so many people sharing such important work. Thanks to the entire Edible community for your support and friendship.
Stay tuned for more about my adventures in Santa Fe!

A Family Tradition – Winemaking
I recently stopped by to visit a couple of friends. When I entered their home, I was delighted by the scene in front of me! There were Myra and Tom bottling their own homemade wine. This tradition, passed down from Tom’s grandfather, brings their entire family (all generations) together twice a year – once to crush the grapes and make the wine, and the second time to celebrate the results and separate their share.
I arrived just in time to learn how to bottle and cork. While the process can be somewhat tedious, it was much fun sharing it with Tom and Myra. Of course, the whole thing was made even more fun by the seemingly endless glass of wine that I “tasted!”

So many of us have traditions and routines around food and drink that nourish the body, as well as the heart and soul. If you have a tradition unique to your family, share it here. You never know what will inspire someone else to start a tradition of their own!
To your good health – body, mind and soul!

Great Day at MACY’S!
Thanks to all who attended and helped me kick off the MACY’S Top Chef Series for 2010 yesterday in New York City. It was a great afternoon of nourishment and connection – CLEAN FOOD style, of course!

After all of the decadence from the holidays, I can think of no better way to start the new year than Warm Greens with Citrus Dressing and Pomegranate (p.159) for fifty!

As some of you know, my own personal kitchen is a bit on the “challenged” side, so it was like a dream come true working in this great space.

If you didn’t make it to MACY’S, there will be a repeat performance this Saturday at noon at Urban Oaks Organic Farm in New Britain, CT. Come on by, taste some CLEAN FOOD, and shop the farm for your week’s supply of fresh, local, organic produce.
Hope to see you soon!
